Democratic Party of Cyprus is taking initiative on issue of Hagia Sophia

The President of the Democratic Party of Cyprus, Nikolas Papadopoulos, announced that it would take an initiative on the issue of Hagia Sophia.

According to their statement, the threats of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque need to be addressed. “As a Democratic Party, we believe in the power of civil society that, with the appropriate actions, could thwart Turkey’s political machinations against history, religious freedom and UNESCO principles. We have started, among other things, collecting signatures of citizens,” said the Democratic Party of Cyprus.

Moreover, the party spoke of Turkey’s efforts to erase history without respecting religious freedom and UNESCO principles. It added that the Turkish government was trying to create another bargaining tool in its talks with Europe. “After the refugee and energy issues, Turkey creates a religious issue. We have been collecting signatures of citizens around the world online in order to oppose Erdogan’s plans,” said the Democratic Party of Cyprus.
